Styling Layered Necklaces for Spring and Summer

So...what’s the short and long of it? I can keep this super simple! Necklaces are of course such an accessorizing staple…especially in spring and summer. Choosing the right LAYERED necklace for what you are wearing, well that isn’t always that easy…until now. I’m sharing basic rules to choosing layered necklaces for certain necklines and wardrobe pieces!

First decision. Do you need a necklace at all with what you are wearing? The answer is generally yes. Unless the top/dress/sweater you are wearing is beaded, embroidered, an extremely busy pattern, very lacy, or a super high neck, you may want to consider adding a necklace to you fit. There are of course exceptions to the rule (ie: a turtleneck you could technically wear a long necklace) but I stay away from gray areas. If there is even a question like "Is the neck too high?", steer clear.

Once you have decided, yes, I do need a necklace with this look, look the number of necklaces you want to layer. I generally wear two or three necklaces when layering. No more or it tends to look too overwhelming and bulky. Also when layering, keep the chains on the thinner side. It keeps the look feminine without weighing you down. One other tip to keep in mind when choosing the number of necklaces is scale. At least one should have a charm or chunky medal and the others more dainty and subtle.

Chain length is super important to choosing necklaces to layer. They should all have varying lengths. Don't wear two necklaces that hang down at exactly the same length. These tend to get twisted and it makes any charms on them not sit right on your neck. Make sure that they hang no less than half an inch from one another. Just FYI, one of my favorite necklace lengths is 18". 18" simple gold necklaces work I've found with a lot of wardrobe pieces. Next is my biggest tip is in regards to where the end of the necklace or charm/medallion on a necklace should lay on your neck. Best way to decide? Make sure the bottom of every necklace, layered or not, falls about 1.5-2 inches (minimum) before the neckline of your top, or 1.5-2 inches past the neckline of the top you are wearing. If it falls short of these measurements, you are going to be constantly adjusting them and they will generally not look as cute.

I chose to layer these gorjana necklaces for this post. The quality is incredible, there are so many cute options and they have really been designed to keep the simple rules above in tact. Love that you can add a charm or two to them as well! You can shop the ones I’m wearing below!

Hope this helps you with a general rule of thumb when it comes to choosing layered necklaces to wear for spring and summer. Is there anything cuter than a fun dress with a few layered necklaces? I think not.
